I don't know Greek at all, so I've only read Homer in English. I liked the Odyssey, but I share your meh toward the Iliad. Plus, by the time I read the Iliad, I had already fallen in love with the Aeneid, so I was always on the Trojans' side--that didn't work out so well!
Latin lost a lot of magic for me after high school. Nothing I studied afterwards really grabbed me like Vergil did. But I do miss my days as a Latin nerd...
